World Water Day is an international day of awareness celebrated annually on March 22 since 1993, established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 22, 1992.
The origin of World Water Day dates back to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, also known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. It was during this event that the UNGA adopted the resolution to establish a day dedicated to emphasizing the importance of fresh water.1 This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the sustainable management of water resources and highlight the vital role of water in sustainable development, addressing the water crisis and supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 6: guarantee access to water and sanitation for all by 2030.
