Earth Overshoot Day is the illustrative calendar date calculated on which humanity’s resource consumption during the year exceeds the Earth’s ability to regenerate those resources that year. The term “excess” represents the level at which human population demand exceeds the sustainable amount of regenerated biological resources on Earth. When viewed from an economic perspective, Earth Overshoot Day represents the day when the planet’s annual regenerative budget is spent and humanity enters environmental deficit spending.
Since the 1970s, humanity’s ecological footprint and the Earth’s biocapacity have diverged to the point that the planet’s resources now only last us until early August.
Earth Overshoot Day is calculated by the Global Footprint Network and is a campaign supported by dozens of other nonprofit organizations.
